Pakistani-American poet and writer Rais Warsi has been recognized with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by U.S. President Joe Biden, honoring his lifelong dedication to promoting Urdu on a global scale. The award, symbolizing outstanding service and commitment, was presented to Warsi by New York State Assembly member Jessica Gonzalez on behalf of President Biden.
Rais Warsi has been instrumental in elevating the status of Urdu internationally, most notably by organizing the first-ever Urdu conference at the United Nations. This conference played a crucial role in advocating for Urdu to be included as one of the UN’s official languages, a proposal supported by the leaders of Pakistan, India, and the UN Secretary-General. The conference also highlighted the cultural significance of Urdu, drawing attention from prominent Urdu writers and intellectuals worldwide.
In addition to this recognition, Warsi has been deeply involved in humanitarian efforts, working with organizations such as the International Humanitarian Foundation, the Carter Foundation, and Amnesty International. His contributions to literature have been substantial, including the publication of “Virsa,” the world’s first international literary journal focused on Urdu, and receiving multiple awards, including the Pride of Pakistan Award from the Government of Pakistan in 2017. His works, celebrated by notable figures in the literary world, continue to inspire and promote Urdu culture globally.
This award not only acknowledges his literary achievements but also his broader contributions to cultural diplomacy and humanitarian work
