After a significant loss in the UK general election, Rishi Sunak stepped down as Prime Minister. Addressing the nation from outside 10 Downing Street, he acknowledged the transfer of power to Keir Starmer, who will become the next Prime Minister following the Labour Party’s overwhelming victory.
In a short speech to the press, Sunak announced his resignation as Conservative leader, pending the selection of his successor. He is currently en route to meet the King to formally resign as Prime Minister.
Sunak apologized to the country for the Conservatives’ poorest electoral performance in recent history, stating, “I take responsibility for this loss.”
Despite the defeat, Sunak highlighted the Conservatives’ accomplishments during their 14 years in power, claiming the UK is now “more prosperous, fairer, and resilient than in 2010.” He also commended his rival, Sir Keir Starmer, calling him a “decent, public-spirited man” and expressed his belief that Starmer’s successes would benefit the country.
