Outrage in France Over Reported Gang-Rape of Jewish Girl Amid Rising Antisemitism Ahead of Elections

On June 19, 2024, the public gathered at Paris city hall square to condemn the alleged antisemitic gang rape of a 12-year-old girl, while political reactions intensified following the indictment of two 13-year-olds for the crime amid the ongoing general election campaign. AFP

The reported gang-rape of a 12-year-old Jewish girl in northern France has sparked outrage over the rising antisemitism in the country, a crucial issue in the upcoming French parliamentary elections this month.

Politicians from across the spectrum have commented on the alleged incident. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the “scourge of antisemitism” he claims is spreading in French schools, while far-right leaders blamed the left for not addressing antisemitism seriously enough.

The Nanterre prosecutor’s office announced on Wednesday that it has opened an investigation into the alleged “aggravated rape” of a minor, following “reports from a 12-year-old girl” about the incident on June 15.
