SINGAPORE: Nvidia is developing a version of its latest flagship AI chips for the Chinese market that adheres to current US export restrictions, according to three sources familiar with the situation.
In March, the AI chip leader introduced its “Blackwell” chip series, slated for mass production later this year.
Among this series, the B200 chip is 30 times faster than its predecessor for certain tasks, such as generating responses from chatbots.
Nvidia plans to collaborate with Inspur, one of its key distribution partners in China, to launch and distribute the chip, tentatively named the “B20,” two sources mentioned.
The sources requested anonymity as Nvidia has not yet made an official announcement. An Nvidia spokesperson declined to comment, and Inspur did not respond to requests for comment.
In 2023, Washington imposed stricter controls on exporting advanced semiconductors to China to prevent advancements in supercomputing that could benefit China’s military. Since then, Nvidia has developed three chips specifically designed for the Chinese market.
