Julian Assange Returns to Australia After US Court Release

Julian Assange greeted by family as he lands in Australia

Australia: Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, has returned to Australia after being released from a US court. He arrived at the airport where he was warmly greeted by his wife and father, with a small group of supporters cheering on. On Wednesday, Assange entered a guilty plea to a single charge in a court in the Northern Mariana Islands, concluding a protracted legal battle. He had been targeted by US prosecutors for releasing a substantial amount of military data and was concerned about the possibility of a lengthy sentence in a high-security US prison. Last week, he reached an agreement with the US authorities to plead guilty to just one charge instead of the initial 18 charges he faced. Assange departed the UK on Monday, after spending five years imprisoned there while contesting extradition to the US.
