On August 14, 1947, the Indian Independence Act came into effect, ending 200 years of British colonial rule and dividing the country into two independent dominions, India and Pakistan. Pakistan celebrates its Independence Day on August 14, a day earlier than India, due to the schedule of Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last viceroy of British India, who handed over power to Pakistan’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, in Karachi on that day. The following day, India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, delivered “Tryst with Destiny” speech as India became independent at midnight on August 15. The partition that accompanied independence led to widespread violence and the mass migration of millions of people, resulting in deep-seated hostility between the two newly formed nations, which persists to this day.
