On Wednesday, Democratic US presidential candidate Kamala Harris reiterated her accusation that her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, is planning to implement a ‘Project 2025′ agenda, which she claims would allow him to “control the daily lives of US citizens.” In response, former President Trump distanced himself from the agenda, asserting that he hasn’t even read it. The clash between the two contenders surfaced during their presidential debate, with both preparing for the upcoming November 5 election. President Joe Biden has also urged voters to reject Trump, citing the dangers of Project 2025, which he warns could be implemented if Trump is re-elected. Project 2025 consists of conservative policy proposals that critics argue will be pursued if Trump returns to the White House.
The plan, outlined in a roughly 900-page document, has been developed by numerous conservative leaders and is being overseen by the Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank not officially connected to Trump’s campaign. However, Reuters reports that many of Trump’s close policy advisers and potential administration officials are involved in the project. Harris’ campaign has published a detailed document claiming that Project 2025 would “strip” people of their freedoms by enforcing regulations such as mandating states to report on women’s miscarriages and abortions, reducing social security and Medicare, and abolishing the Department of Education.
The proposal, according to Harris’ campaign, focuses on the first 180 days of Trump’s potential second term, consolidating power in his hands by enabling the firing of non-partisan government employees more easily. The campaign further alleges that the plan would undermine the independence of the Department of Justice and the FBI, turning them into tools of the White House. Additionally, it claims that the agenda would increase discrimination against LGBTQ+ Americans.
