French Prime Minister to Resign Following Inconclusive Snap Election Results

Left-wing supporters were seen celebrating on the streets of Paris following the results of the exit poll.

Paris: France’s Prime Minister announced on Sunday that he will resign and submit his resignation to the President on Monday, following the results of the second round of snap elections.

Gabriel Attal noted that neither the far-right National Rally (RN) nor the left-wing alliance New Popular Front (NFP) secured an outright majority to govern.

“Tonight, the political formation I represent has no majority. I will submit my resignation to the President tomorrow morning,” Attal stated, as reported by Anadolu Agency (AA).

According to projections by the surveying company Ifop, the NFP is expected to win 180 to 205 seats in the National Assembly. The centrist alliance, Together for the Republic, supported by President Emmanuel Macron, is projected to secure 164 to 174 seats, while Marine Le Pen’s RN is expected to gain 130 to 145 seats.

With a total of 577 seats in the National Assembly, none of these three main blocs are predicted to achieve an absolute majority of 289 seats.

In the first round of elections on June 30, 76 candidates were elected without requiring a second round.

The RN received 29.26 percent of the vote in the first round (37 seats), rising to over 33 percent with its allies. The NFP garnered 28.06 percent (32 seats), while the centrist Together alliance finished third with just over 20.04 percent (two seats).

President Macron dissolved parliament and called for early elections after the RN won more than 31 percent of the vote in the European Parliament elections on June 9, defeating his centrist bloc. – Bernama, Anadolu
